On July 19th, the latest stable version of Debian GNU/Linux was made public. This new version of Debian offers some newer applications, more cryptographic support, and some other features. While still retaining the "old but stable" software mentality Debian has always had, it does offer some new software that will interest existing Debian users and may even interest some who have not used Debian before.

Charming Python: Generator-based state machines  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

4 This article shows how to use Python's new generators to simplify state machines and simulate coroutines. It also shows additional patterns for the use of generators, in hopes of bringing readers further into the mindset of "resumable functions." If generators are new to you, you should first review the introduction to simple generators. There are a lot of benefits to using simple generators. In addition to offering more natural ways of expressing the flow of a class of problems, generators can dramatically improve many inefficiencies.

Developing a Linux command-line utility  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

6 I liked this article because it shows you how to write Linux command-line utilities that are foolproof enough even for end users. It covers solid command-line best practices and also includes a comprehensive tour of a working page-selection tool. This article gives you good background to start writing your own utilities. It is modeled on de facto conventions for creating commands in Linux, including: working standalone, working as a component in a pipeline of commands (by reading either standard input or a filename argument, and writing to standard output and standard error), and taking command line options that modify its behavior.

"Random Walkers" may speed P2P networks  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
    Saturday, July 06 2002 @ 02:16 AM MDT
    Contributed by: Ang (14 reads)
2 New Scientist posts an article about an innovative new method of controlling P2P traffic to maximize speed over a very large network. The idea, thought up by researchers at Princeton, Berkeley, AT&T, and Cisco, involves sending random "walkers" around the network, looking for a particular file, which would theoretically yield much better search speed than such other networks as Gnutella. They claim this could result in a network very capable of facilitating a massive distributed supercomputer.
